RESEARCH PROJECT POLYMNIA
Development of Music Tools and Music Portal POLYMNIA
The research project "POLYMNIA – Development of Music Tools and Music Portal" concerns the development of a group of innovative utilitarian tools which aim to serve all forms of musical interest (digitalisation of music documents, musicological research, music creation, music performance, music education, music culture, wide music information and entertainment). The individual tools proposed can function either as a stand alone application, or in combination with a special music portal, in order to provide to users full service and at the same time the wide public to draw music related information.
The developed tools, distributed in concrete packages of work are:
- A System of automated Optical Recognition of Byzantine Musical Notation. It is a specialised system of Optical Character Recognition (OCR) of printed or manuscript documents, where the characters are the marks of Byzantine music notation. The system aims to:
- a) facilitate the digitalisation of the enormous musical repertory of Byzantine music notation in metadata
- b) recognise and assist the transformation of the old notation to a new one and
- c) transform the Byzantine notation to other recognisable forms.
- a) facilitate the digitalisation of the enormous musical repertory of Byzantine music notation in metadata
The system can function either as stand alone application or in collaboration with the music portal.

- System of recognition, classification and retrieving of musical information based on the musical content. This system aims to recognise the musical characteristics from a digitalised musical material, to export them in a standardised form of metadata, to categorise them with musical criteria, to be able to compare and retrieve them depending on the musical content. Such a tool is particularly useful
- a) to sound music files (recordings of traditional music, record labels, radio stations etc)
- b) for the recognition of originality (useful to companies of protection of intellectual rights but also to composers) and
- c) in order the user to be able to locate a piece of music when he only knows its melody.

- Group of subsidiary tools of music creation and performance.
It is a group of small stand alone utilitarian tools of music creation and performance- the original virtual synthesisers (VCS3, UPIC) and the virtual system of sound composition Web Rhythm Machine, that represent each one a different way of composition, developed in network application so as to be accessible from all over the world.
- Tools for joint web performance. (web MIDI jam and web-accompanist).
- Movement transformed into music (e-motion, an electronic music instrument with sensors which is functioning with the body movement).
- the original virtual synthesisers (VCS3, UPIC) and the virtual system of sound composition Web Rhythm Machine, that represent each one a different way of composition, developed in network application so as to be accessible from all over the world.
These tools aim to be used by:
a) authors, providing for them new timbre and creative possibilities,
b) performers (professional, amateur and students) and
c) non musicians (other artists, students), helping them to express their musical creativity. The tools function as web or stand alone applications (virtual studio).

- Virtual Music Instruments. It is the development of an application that allows on the one side the virtual construction and 3-dimensional representation of music instruments and on the other side the production of the sound -via physical model- of physical instruments. The system of virtual music instruments has as an objective to:
- a) help the researchers to researchers to reconstruct traditional or ancient musical instruments, which are rare or has not been preserved,
- b) be used by performers and composers as an alternative to physical ones,
- c) be used as a useful tool of music tutoring,
- d) offer to the composers the possibility to produce new timbres and transformations and
- e) help the musical instrument makers with tools that can be used as adequate test before the actual construction.
- a) help the researchers to researchers to reconstruct traditional or ancient musical instruments, which are rare or has not been preserved,
The system can function either as stand alone application or in collaboration with the music portal.

- Creation of Digital Multimedia Thesaurus of Greek Music. It is an open multimedia platform which incorporates music terminology, information and digitalised documents (including image and sound examples as well as links and references), related to music and particularly to the Greek Music Culture. The thesaurus aims to:
- provide information to all kind of users,
- constitute a very useful tool for tuition, for all educational grades and
- constitute an important promotion tool of the Greek Music Culture internationally.
- provide information to all kind of users,
The number of registrations is about 3000 for time being, while the machine is open-ended, supporting the possibility of future development- even remotely from selected users. The Thesaurus can also be bilingual.
(Development ΙΕΜΑ)
- Music Portal. The music portal includes special services that increase the functions of the developed tools (recognition of Byzantine notation, Retrieving of music information from the content, Virtual Collection and Laboratory of Musical Instruments, Virtual Studio for composition and performance, Thesaurus of Greek Music) in order that the user acquire a completed experience. The music portal aims to provide innovative services covering the needs of a very big number of users.
